Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches concerning the Turks and Caicos Islands from Edward Rushworth, acting governor of Jamaica (September to December 1872) together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals sent during the year. Other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (proceedings of HMS Sphinx with Sir John Grant on board, no objection to Ordinance No. 1 of 1872 relating to pilots' fees);
  • Foreign Office (release of Abraham Carter from prison at Porto Plata, appointment of Mr A Morrison as United States consular agent at East Harbour);
  • War Office (reports insertion of names of two militia officers in the Army List as requested);
  • Emigration Board (comments on ordinance authorising grants of land for religious purposes);
  • General Post Office (cannot recommend increased subsidy for the mail service [2 items]);
  • Meteorological Office (acknowledges receipt of chart showing course of a recent hurricane).
Individuals:
  • Oscar Arthur, 'spiritual medium' (complains about maladministration of the Receiver General's department [2 items] and applies for a lieutenant colonelcy in the West India Regiment. [A separate letter states, 'I have the honor to inform you for Her Most Gracious Majesty's guidance that I have it in command by the Holy Spirit .. that Dr Livingstone died .. on 7 September 1871.];
  • Sir John Grant, governor of Jamaica (states that task of carrying out the annexation of the Turks Islands to Jamaica might be entrusted to President Campbell but the personal visit of the governor would be beneficial, no time will be lost in carrying out Colonial Office instructions);
  • James Maclean (seeks alternative employment);
  • Reverend Albert Rivers (application for extension of leave, claim to half salary during leave);
  • Dr Thomas M Sunter (reports the arrival from Turks Islands of a remittance for Commander Hamilton)
