Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches concerning the Turks and Caicos Islands from John P Grant, governor of Jamaica (September to December 1871) together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals sent during the year. Other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (not anticipated that any attempt would be made at Turks Islands to break the neutrality laws and presence of Royal Navy ship not considered necessary, no objection to Ordinance concerning pilotage fees, reports visit of HMS Lapwing following receipt of reports of distressed condition of inhabitants);
  • Board of Trade (reply to request for information about resolutions of United States House of Representatives abolishing duties on coal and salt);
  • Foreign Office (expresses opinion that proceedings of President Campbell with reference to the alleged conspiracy against Haiti should be approved, appointment of Mr G W Driggs as US consul [2 items], repeal of Haitian law imposing duties on small trading vessels [4 items], appointment of Julien Edouard Héraux as Haitian consul [3 items], abolition of duty on salt in United States, provisional appointment of consuls);
  • Emigration Board (Mr Neill's application for lease of French Cay, application of 'a man of colour' for lease of Negro Cay, grants of land for religious purposes).

  • Bishop of Nassau (disendowment of the Church at Turks and Caicos [2 items; printed for Parliament as HC 259 of 1873]);
