Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches concerning the Turks and Caicos Islands from John P Grant, governor of Jamaica, and Edward Rushworth, acting governor, (June to December 1870) together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals sent during the year. Other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (possibility of establishing a harbour of refuge, approves of design for flag, occasional overpayments to pilots, no objection to Ordinance to encourage the apprehension of deserters from the Royal Navy);
  • Privy Council Office (confirmation of Debtors Ordinance 1870);
  • Treasury (approval of application of Crown surplus to the deficit for 1869, no objection to Tariff Ordinance No. 2 of 1870);
  • Foreign Office (payment of compensation to Messrs Hinson and D'Ambroise by the Spanish Government in respect of the seizure of the schooner President, appointment of Mr E Jones as US consul at East Harbour [2 items], appointment of Mr J R Talbot as US vice consul);
  • Emigration Board (President Campbell's tour of inspection of certain out islands, application of Mr Stammers [Stamers] for lease of land at East Caicos [2 items], application of Mr L G Williams for lease of land at Long Cay Island, leasing of land for uncultivated salinas and unreclaimed Crown lands);
  • General Post Office (copies of reports on the Post Office Savings Banks for the information of the President, suggested amendment of rules for the transaction of money order business);
  • Meteorological Office (transmission of meteorological data).

  • Messrs Acton and Worthington (seek address of former President Moir);
  • Reverend M M Dillon (further extension of his sick leave [3 items];
  • Francis Ellis, Queen's Advocate (seeks extension of leave because of a broken wrist and announces his intention to retire and apply for a pension given his age);
  • Messrs C W & W Gray (forward photographs sent by President Campbell);
  • Bishop of Nassau (application for a grant of Crown land at East Harbour for a church);
  • Isaac Pegg (disendowment and reduced educational expenditure and abolition of salt export duty).
