Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches concerning the Turks and Caicos Islands from John P Grant, governor of Jamaica (July to December 1869) together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals sent during the year. Other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Crown Agents (provision of volume of statutes);
  • Privy Council Office (dummy sheet referring to a letter relating to appointments to the Legislative Council which has been filed in the Chief Clerk's series);
  • Board of Trade (legislation providing for the maintenance and efficient regulation of a lighthouse, ordinance for raising a revenue [2 items], additional duty on imports, use of commercial code of signals);
  • Treasury (report from Commissioner of Customs on ordinances for raising a revenue, revised estimates for 1869, Crown Fund account, report of committee appointed to enquire into the condition of the Turks Islands Bank, increased duty on imports, approval of estimates for 1870, Mr E W Tatem's application for part of the sum realised by the sale of certain smuggled goods);
  • Foreign Office (Mr Ewing's recovery of the schooner Thomas Pearson, case of the vessel Flora Hastings, possible opening of trade in salt with Monte Video, exequatur for US consul Mr Oliver Mungen, no objection to recognition of Mr Hutchings as commercial agent for San Domingo, compensation offered by Spanish Government to Messrs Hinson and D'Ambrose, detention at Jamaica of British vessel Proctor of Dominica, appointment of John H Stewart as US consul [2 items]);
  • Emigration Board (reduction of the export duty on salt, proposed lease of Little Ambergris Cay to Mr Hinson);
  • Members of Council (appointment and salary of Head Master and Inspector of Schools);
  • General Post Office (responsibility of Jamaican Government for defalcations of Mr Darrell, cost of packet service between Turks Islands and St Thomas).
Individuals:
  • W J Bullock, Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (passage money for Reverend Mark James [2 items]);
  • Reverend M M Dillon (his sick leave [2 items, one with copy of the Royal Standard of 10 July 1869 including a letter of appreciation from his parishioners]);
  • F Ellis, Queen's Advocate (his sick leave);
  • John Ellis (claim of Mr Murray against the Spanish Government in connection with the capture of the schooner Eliza);
  • Reverend Mark James (possible appointment to post of rector of St George's [2 items]);
  • Alexander Moir, former President (seeks further appointment, applies for post of Colonial Secretary of Jamaica, his opinion on proposed reduction of offices);
  • Bishop of Nassau (appointment of Reverend Mark James).
