Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on matters relating to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Crown Agents (payment for distillery apparatus);
  • Privy Council Office (appointment of Mr Melfort Campbell [missing]);
  • Foreign Office (seeks further information relating to the claim of Mr Moxey who was a passenger on board the Forward when she was seized by Spanish authorities in 1864 [with details of incident], publicity to foreign states about salt production, appointment of Mr Crisson as acting US vice consul, appointment of permanent US vice consul, request from Rio de Janeiro for samples of salt, seizure of British sloop Spree by the Dominican schooner of war Carlotta [2 items], request from Buenos Aires for samples of salt, appointment of Mr Oliver Mungen as US consul, response from Madrid to claim concerning seizure of the British schooner President in 1864);
  • Emigration Board (response to petitions concerning export duty on salt [2 items], comparative cost of salt production in Turks and Caicos Islands and in Inagua, validity of a grant from the Crown of a portion of the East Harbour salt pond, new Tariff Ordinance);

  • Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts (suggests Mr Mark James for vacant post of rector of St George's);
  • Members of Council (export duty on salt and related matters [5 items];
  • Board of Trade (salt trade);
  • Treasury (have authorised Stationery Office to supply volumes of UK Acts as requested by governor, Crown fund estimates, accounts of the Public Bank).

  • Dr John Moir (recommends his brother President Alexander Moir for promotion, forwards account of President Moir's service in the West Indies);
  • James Maclean (seeks further details of vacant post of head master and inspector of schools, accepts appointments offered to himself and his wife [as head master and inspector of schools and head mistress of the Girls School];
  • Bishop of Nassau (retirement of Reverend W Glanville, request of Reverend Mr Gabriel for employment, rejection of Mr James as Rector of St George's on grounds of his inexperience).
