Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals on matters relating to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (provisions supplied as hurricane relief, ordinance for protection of naval and victualling stores);
  • Crown Agents (repair and rebinding of damaged records and copying from Colonial Office records of items destroyed);
  • Privy Council Office (confirmation of Ordinance No. 6 of 1866 to amend a Bahamas Act authorising the bishop of Jamaica to exercise ecclesiastical jurisdiction over the clergy of the Bahamas);
  • Foreign Office (machinery originally destined for Turks Islands, assistance given by inhabitants of St Thomas and Cape Haytien as hurricane relief, formal approval of Mr C R Hinson to be Haitian consul, case of the British schooner President seized by Spanish authorities [5 items], case of the British schooner Elizaseized by Spanish authorities [2 items]);
  • Emigration Board (return to UK of water distilling apparatus intended for Turks Islands and costs involved, no objection to Ordinance No. 8 of 1867 to prevent the unlawful cutting of timber);
  • General Post Office (balance due on money order account);
  • General Register Office (registration of births, marriages and deaths);
  • Treasury (no objection to expenditure of £1431 12s 9d for hurricane relief, no objection to Ordinance No. 14 of 1866 to provide for repayment of money advanced for hurricane relief, payment to the account for naval services authorised, no objection to estimates for 1868, legislation for the establishment of a Savings Bank [with report from Registry of Friendly Societies]);
