Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches concerning the Turks and Caicos Islands from John P Grant, governor of Jamaica, dated December 1866. With correspondence from ‘offices’ (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals sent during the year. Other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (visit of a vessel of war, visit of HMS Cadmus to provide hurricane relief);
  • Privy Council Office (amendment of the Health Ordinance of 1852, approval of draft proclamation 'for declaring the rates at which the United States silver half dollars and quarter dollars shall pass current in the Turks Islands');
  • Foreign Office (forwards Law Officers' report concerning the case of the Confederate schooner St Mary's, claim of Mrs Goode against the Spanish government for the loss of her son who was killed at San Domingo in 1863 [2 items], receipt of distilling machine at St Thomas for forwarding to Turks Islands together with an engineer [3 items], appointment of Edward Maynard as United States consul, seizure of the British vessel President for alleged breach of the revenue laws of San Domingo, appointment of C R Hinson as Haitian consul, Mr Moore's claim for compensation for the seizure of his vessel the Rapid by a Spanish war ship, appointment of A J Astwood as representative of the Triumvirate of San Domingo rejected as the Triumvirate no longer exists);
  • Land and Emigration Board (distress caused by failure of rains and need for distilling equipment and engineer [7 items], amendment of master and servant legislation, possible sale of rails for a tramway to Messrs Firth & Murphy);
  • Baptist Missionary Society (hurricane relief);
  • Board of Trade (no comment on proposed amendment of Health Ordinance No 10 of 1852, expenses incurred on behalf of the crew of the Pioneer);
  • Treasury (share of expense of packet service [2 items], distilling apparatus [2 items], legalisation of circulation of United States half and quarter dollars and exchange rate [2 items], requests further information regarding estimates of revenue and expenditure, balance of funds held by colonial treasurer, no objection to expenditure proposed in President's despatch of 16 June 1866);
  • War Office (relative ranks of Volunteer and Militia officers).

  • Reverend Marmaduke M Dillon (requests another appointment in view of the inadequacy of his salary [with correspondence regretting his decision]);

  • Bishop of Nassau (unsatisfactory nature of his connection with the Turks Islands);
