Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches from Edward John Eyre, governor of Jamaica, relating to the Turks and Caicos Islands (July to December 1865) together with letters from 'offices' (government departments and other organisations) and individuals sent during the year. Correspondence from offices and individuals is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (entertainment of President Moir);
  • Foreign Office (approval of instructions to be issued in the case of the Eliza, claim against Spanish Government following seizure of the IOU, Mrs Good's claim for compensation from the Spanish Government for the death of her son, claim of Mr Andrew Barclay against the Spanish Government for the seizure of the Dart and the Scat, expenses incurred by vice consul at St Domingo on account of the crews of the Eliza and the Pioneer, seizure of the Clara by a Spanish warship, case of the Confederate schooner St Mary's, report of the law officers on the case of the Confederate schooner St Mary's);
  • Home Office (forwards plan and specifications for proposed prison [plan not in item; sent to the governor]);
  • Emigration Board (corrected terms of sale for the disposal of the North Salina, plan of the survey of the East Harbour salt pond has not arrived, lease of Salt Rock granted to Mr Eugenius Jones);
  • General Post Office (no objection to ordinance to provide for the appropriation of postage in inter-colonial registered letters, no objection to ordinance to establish the money order business, money order business to commence in January 1866);
  • Board of Trade (establishment of a court of inquiry in wreck cases, expenses incurred by British vice consul at St Domingo in respect of crews of three colonial ships, details of expenses incurred by vice consul, no objection to ordinance for continuing in force legislation for raising a revenue, case of the Pioneer, case of the Eliza, proposed erection of lighthouse at Sand Cay);
  • Treasury (cost of passages of President Moir and his private secretary, complaint about sending sovereigns by post rather than making payment by more secure means, agreement that Public Bank should not at present be disconnected from the colonial government, no objection to Ordinance No 9 of 1865 to continue in force No 20 of 1860 and No 10 of 1862, payment for passages of President Moir and his private secretary, purchase of land and buildings for conversion into a hospital, no objection to estimates of revenue and expenditure for 1866 nor to the introduction of travelling expenses for the president);
  • War Office (comments on amended rules for No 1 Company of the Turks Island Volunteer Corps).

  • John Arthurs (application for post of judge);
  • Alfred John Duncombe, judge (claim for promotion, application for extension of leave, enquires if any decision has been made on his application for promotion, further on his application for extension of leave, letter concerning his passage to Turks Islands together with correspondence relating to his appointment to the post of assistant justice at Bahamas);
  • Reverend Mr Dillon (his appointment as rector of St Thomas and his travelling expenses);
  • Frances Lightbourn (vacant living of St Thomas);
  • Bishop of Nassau (possible difficulty in appointing Mr Lightbourn who is in American orders although a British subject, Reverend H Bullocke unable to accept appointment).
