Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches from Edward John Eyre, governor of Jamaica, relating to the Turks and Caicos Islands (September to December 1864) together with letters from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals sent during the year. Despatches at described at item level; correspondence from offices and individuals is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (seizure of British vessels by Spanish cruisers, president's entertainment on HMS Petrel [formerly given as 'Peterel'], president's entertainment on HMS Rosario, proposed harbour at North Creek);
  • Foreign Office (destruction of Puerto Plata, Spanish subjects Pedro Verela and Lucas Moreno, blockade of St Domingo, charges levied By Spanish authorities upon British shipping, proclamation concerning Spanish blockade of St Domingo, position of British government with regard to Dominican insurgents, case of the Eliza and the President); approve terms of notification issued by governor of Jamaica to warn owners of British vessels
  • Home Office (new gaol at Grand Turk);
  • Emigration Board (Mr Butterfield's claim to relief as to railway, Ordinance No. 8 of 1863 to amend the Land Ordinance 1863, tenure of salt ponds, Mr Butterfield's lease of East Harbour pond, Mr Edward E Jones's application for a lease, commutation of salt pond rents, return documents, disposal of salina at East Harbour);
  • General Post Office (no objection to Ordinance to amend Post Office Ordinance No. 5 of 1854, no objection to Ordinance to promote steam communications, monthly mail with Liverpool);
  • Board of Trade (Mr Reynold's application for a British register for the American schooner Sarah Burton, erection of lighthouse at Sand Cay
  • Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (manufacture of salt);
  • Treasury (relief of refugees from Puerto Plata, furniture for Government House, payment of sums from Crown revenue, escheated property of Mary Astwood, rules of management of Public Bank, proposal of Public Bank to lend on personal security, no objection to estimates of Crown funds for 1865, appropriation of funds for erection of building at East Harbour salina, affairs of the bank);
  • War Office (proposal to exercise police with arms sent for use of volunteers)
