Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches from Edward John Eyre, lieutenant governor of Jamaica, on matters relating to the Turks and Caicos Islands (July-December 1863), together with letters from 'offices' (Government Departments and other organisations) and individuals sent during the year. Correspondence from offices and individuals is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Agent (supply of cotton gins);
  • Privy Council Office (Councillor W Stamer [not in volume], manufacture of salt);
  • Foreign Office (exemption from duty of supplies for US war ships, US consular agent Mr A W Harriott);
  • Land and Emigration Commission (proposed commutation of salt pond tenure, claim from Hawes Salina lessees to have canal put into proper repair, Mr Winter's proposal to resume cultivation of salina, sale of forfeited salinas, Mr Butterfield's complaint about salt ponds ordinance, duty on salt, salt pond ordinance, Mr Butterfield's lease of salt pond, legislation to secure possession of salina, Mr Butterfield's claim to exemption from duty);
  • Lancashire and Cheshire Relief Fund (contribution for distressed operatives);
  • Post Office (conveyance of mails, mail communication with Jamaica);
  • Board of Trade (British register for US schooner Sarah Burton [not in volume]);
  • Treasury (President Inglis's passage allowance, President Moir to draw for £150, escheated property of Mary Astwood, estimate of Crown funds for 1864, ordinance to amend the bank ordinance).

  • J A Astwood (property claim [not in volume]);
  • Nathaniel J Butterfield (protest against salt duty ordinance, railway clause);
  • N A Butterfield (alterations to salt pond leases);
  • W H Gibbs and others (increased expenditure on salaries and other fixed expenditure).
