Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches from Lieutenant Governor Edward John Eyre sent during November and December 1862, together with letters from 'offices' (government departments and other organisations) and individuals sent during the course of the year. Correspondence from offices and individuals is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows: Offices:

  • Admiralty (control over packet service handed over to Paymaster General, salvage due for certain articles saved from the wreck of HMS Driver, passage for Mrs Moir);
  • Foreign Office (legislation regulating tonnage dues on vessels trading between Turks Islands and Haiti, trade regulations at St Thomas, Haitian political refugees, no objection to ordinance to prohibit the exportation of arms);
  • Land and Emigration Board (salt ponds tenure, salt ponds rent balance due to Crown, repossession of 100 acres of salina granted to Mr Winter, appointment of Mr Lockhard as curator of property formerly leased by Mr Winter, Chancery proceedings instituted by Mr Frith in connection with the estate of the Belle Isle Company on West Caicos);
  • Cotton Supply Association, Manchester (cotton cultivation);
  • General Post Office (proposed new contract for packet service, contract for mail packet service entered into by colonial government, requests statement of expenditure on mail packet service, contemplated alteration of mail packet service, no objection to ordinance to provide for the prepayment of postage);
  • Royal Mail Steam Packet Company (passages to Turks Islands);
  • Board of Trade (no objection to ordinance to regular pilotage);
  • Treasury (Crown funds estimates for 1862, additions to Government House, Crown funds estimates for 1863, no objection to appropriation ordinance, expenses of Mr Moir's removal from British Honduras to Turks Islands, transfer of funds from Crown revenue to general revenue);
  • War Office (issue of rifles for sergeants of volunteer corps, instructor for volunteer corps).
Individuals:
  • Mr John Arthur (charges against local government);
  • Governor C H Darling (supply of cotton gins for cotton growers);
  • William H Gibbs (various correspondence relating to the salt ponds);
  • Dr John Moir (passage for Mr A W Moir).
