Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches from Charles Henry Darling, governor of Jamaica, and William Robert Inglis, president of the Turks and Caicos Islands (September to December 1858), together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters relating to Turks and Caicos sent during the year. Correspondence from offices and individuals is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Admiralty (enquiry about wreck of vessel supposed to be the British frigate Severn, irregularities in mail service, further correspondence regarding the Severn, passage for Mr A J Duncombe judge of the Supreme Court);
  • Privy Council Office ('dummy' sheets for letters dated 4 February, 7 April, 15 November and 16 November, referenced 1103, 3403, 11720 and 11761 respectively; no subjects given and all marked as missing);
  • Emigration Office (tenure of salt ponds, right of lessees to use public beach to deposit salt);
  • Foreign Office (exequatur for James B Hague appointed US consul):
  • War Office (erection of barracks, ordnance stores);
  • Colonial Church and School Society (need for a missionary clergyman);
  • C B Phipps, Balmoral (return of documents submitted to the Queen);
  • General Post Office (mail service);
  • Alfred John Duncombe (application for post of assistant justice)
