Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Despatches from Henry Barkly, Governor of Jamaica, concerning the Turks and Caicos Islands, and from W R Inglis, President of Turks and Caicos, as well as letters from various government offices (departments) and from Individuals. Correspondence from Offices and Individuals (most of which relates to the despatches sent from the governor and president in CO 301/19, and CO 301/20) is not. Offices: Admiralty (agreement with Boston Submarine and Wrecking Company; suspension of pilot); Board of Trade (Ordinances No. 7 of 1854, No. 2 of 1855); Foreign Office (claims of naturalised British subject against Dominican government, case of US Consul Nelson, appointment of new US consul); Treasury (estimates and accounts, Ordinances No. 8 of 1854 and No. 7 of 1855, lighthouse accounts, proposed surrender to the colony of Crown and Admiralty droits [retrieval of wrecks]); War Department (defences, militia, replacement of muskets, provision of non-commissioned officer of the Royal Artillery to instruct the local artillery); General Post Office (uniform postage rate, establishment of Post Office and Packet Agency). Individuals: Frederick Forth, former president of Turks and Caicos (requests for re-employment and accounts of his career with numerous enclosures). (Described at item level)
