Administrative / biographical background

The Medicines Commission was established in 1969, under the terms of the Medicines Index Act 1968. Its duty is to advise a body of ministers of the Department of Health and Ministery of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food on matters relating to the execution of the act and, in particular, on the licensing and certification of medicinal products.

The act requires that the commission has at least eight members. Members are appointed by the body of ministers, after consultation, and includes members with no scientific background as well as people with wide and recent experience in the fields of medicine (including veterinary medicine), pharmaceutics, and chemistry.
