From 1985 Department of Health and Social Security
Under the National Health Service Reorganisation Act 1973 Regional Health Authorities replaced Regional Hospital Boards. The authorities were similar though not identical in function to the Boards and did not always cover the same geographical areas.
The authorities each consisted of a chairman appointed by the Secretary of State for Social Services and of such number of other members, appointed by him, as he thought fit. In making the appointments it was the duty of the Secretary of State, under Schedule 1 of the 1973 Act, to consult local authorities, universities, such bodies as were representative of medical practitioners, dental practitioners, nurses, midwives etc. and voluntary organisations.
