Regional Hospital Boards were set up under the National Health Service Act 1946; they were appointed by the Secretary of State after consultation with interested bodies (local authorities, voluntary organisations and bodies representing the various medical professions). Under the National Health Service Reorganisation Act 1973 the boards were abolished and replaced by Regional Health Authorities.
