The series contains material relating to the dock labour scheme, its implementation and administration, the definition of dock work, the engagement, control and transfer of labour, discipline, industrial relations and strikes. The series also includes minutes of meetings of the NDLB and its various committees from 1947 to 1967, and minutes of local dock labour boards. Other subjects covered include health and safety, welfare, education, sport and other amenities, industrial agreements and inquiries, general correspondence and statistics, and some Head Office circulars.
Apart from two papers dated 1907 and 1913, the earliest item is dated 1941; most of the records are dated from 1947.
