It is not proposed to add to this series as, from 1965, the majority of readings were recorded on automatic equipment.
In 1942, an RAF Flight equipped with Spitfire and Boston aircraft was set up at Boscombe Down, Wiltshire, to investigate meteorological problems associated with the wartime operations of aircraft.
In 1946 this Flight was moved to the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) at Farnborough, Hampshire, where it has remained ever since. It was then formally recognised as the Meteorological Research Flight (MRF) with responsibility for conducting atmospheric research from aircraft. The information obtained by the Flight is used in the preparation of weather reports.
The MRF uses Royal Air Force aircraft and aircrew. The RAE provides the facilities for operating the aircraft and also for designing and carrying out the modifications to the aircraft and their equipment needed to fit them for their meteorological role.
