The series reflects all the functions carried out by the Department for the Environment and its predessessors and the selection reflects this. It deals with with matters of general policy including the transfer of functions to the Welsh Office, entrance fees, the use of monuments for special events and rescue archaeology. Records of the Ancient Monuments Board for Wales are also included.
Very few files relating to individual monuments have been transferred. Files relating to the scheduling, listing and other site related records are held by the National Monument Record at the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historic Monuments in Wales at Aberystwyth.

This series has been used for matters relating to historic buildings and monuments in wales throughout the existence of government involvement in the subject. Throughout its existence, the series appears to have been a discrete collection relating wholly to Wales and never a part of any English series.
