Description

FARRER (AND ANOTHER) v HUTCHINSON (AND OTHERS):

Letter Book (marked `E' on cover) consisting of Samuel Farrer's letters to his brother, Ellward and others about shipments of wool, beef and lace, and the Lisbon market (the Peninsular War adversely affecting trade with Portugal's interior due to the requisitioning of horses for army use, and diminished sheep flocks; Lt-Gen Graham unfavourably compared with Wellington; Wellington's success in siege of Badajoz celebrated in Lisbon; expulsion of French from Spain and war with America expected to reduce wool prices; Samuel's attempt to dissuade his brother from manufacture of fine cloth for which Lisbon would provide no market). Upon Samuel's death in 1815, the book was used by Thomas Farrer in Lisbon for letters to Ellward and, after returning to Farnley, to Pollett etc; and, following Thomas's death, by his executors (part 1, 116 folios in English and Portuguese);

Invoice Book (marked D2 on cover): copies of invoices for bales of cloth, cashmeres, bearskins, coatings and fancy goods shipped from Liverpool to Lisbon between 1815 and 1820 (part 2, 70 folios);

Book (marked C: Rent Book, Farnley on cover) used by Thomas Farrer for his current account with Ambrose Pollett, and after 1821 by his executors for rents paid to his estate (part 3, 25 folios).
