Description

Despatches from Sir George Mackworth Bullock, governor of Bermuda (June to December 1913) together with letters from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and from individuals sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (no further observations on Channels Protection Act, expresses thanks to the House of Assembly for passing legislation exempting Royal Navy ships from certain duties, grant towards improvements of Narrows Channel would not be justified in naval interests);
  • Crown Agents (Sales of Land Fund, failure to keep dredger King George in good repair, appeal of prisoner Armstrong against conviction);
  • Privy Council Office (petition of prisoner Armstrong for permission to appeal to the King in Council against conviction for murder [2 items]);
  • Foreign Office (United States tariffs on Bermudian products, visit of the US ship Alabama with members of the New York Naval Militia [2 items], immigration legislation in United States, rumoured establishment of British naval bases in Bermuda and the Pacific);

  • War Office (Army Council agrees that 2nd Lieutenant Stuart Hamilton must become naturalised British citizen or resign his commission in the Bermuda Militia Artillery);
  • General Post Office (claim of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company for reduced light tolls, mail service with New York [3 items]);
  • Board of Agriculture (appointment of Mr Hagman as fish culturist, legislation covering the landing of dogs in the UK);
  • Colonial Office (case of Mrs Sarah MacTaggart a 'coloured' Bermudian nurse now unemployed in England and seeking repatriation);
  • General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada (burial of non-conformists in parish churchyards);
  • Paymaster General (sales of land account);
  • Geological Survey (result of deep borings for water);
  • The Halifax and Bermudas Cable Company, Limited (establishment of a wireless station).
