Description

Despatches from Walter Kitchener, governor of Jamaica (July to December 1911) together with correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters relating to Bermuda sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from offices and individuals is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (celebration of marriages by naval and military chaplains, residence of postmistress at Ireland Island, direct communication between the colonial secretary and the commander-in-charge);
  • Crown Agents (resident engineer for dredging operations [2 items]);
  • Foreign Office (proposed visit of the Honourable and Ancient Artillery Company of Massachusetts to Bermuda, proposed visit of the Honourable and Ancient Artillery Company of Boston to Bermuda);
  • Home Office (forwards copy of model byelaw relating to hoardings and advertisements in response to an enquiry from Bermuda, has no observations on the Advertisements Regulation Act of 1911);
  • Board of Trade (stranding of the Italian barque Filippo Denegri: considers that the two official surveyors were guilty not only of error of judgment but also of neglect of duty, suggested procedure in case of registration of ships owned by a foreign company, fees for registry of ships, forwards copy of correspondence with the Nestle and Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company concerning Bermuda legislation prohibiting the use in advertisements of portraits of the reigning monarch, no observations on Advertisements Regulation Act of 1911);
  • Treasury (sanctions proposed transfer of Quit Rent Fund to the House of Assembly);
  • War Office (threatened water shortages, no observations on the Historic Buildings Act of 1911, no observations on the Military Road Act, reports that there has been rain and there is no longer a concern about water shortage, no objection to visit of the Honourable and Ancient Artillery Company of Massachusetts who can be allowed to land with arms but without ammunition);
  • General Post Office (the Bermuda-New York Mail Service [5 items including printed copy of draft contract], states that Elders & Fyffes are unable to undertake the proposed mail service);
  • Paymaster General's Office (forwards statement showing the balances at the credit of the Bermuda Sales of Land Fund);
  • General Council of Medical Education & Registration (approves provisions of the Bermuda Dental Registration Act of 1991 [with printed copy of the Act]);
  • Board of Customs (no observations on the Bermuda Revenues Act of 1911).

Individuals:

  • Mrs M T Golinsky, The Woman's Agricultural Society of Bermuda (asks for exercise of royal prerogative in the cases of the sentences on John Benjamin Zuill and Eugene C Jackson).
