Description

Despatches from Joscelyn Heneage Wodehouse, governor of Bermuda until December, Officer Administrating the Government Chapman, and Frederick Walter Kitchener, governor of Bermuda from December 1908, together with letters received from 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals relating to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (threat from T Solomon to sell a plan of the fortress of Bermuda to the French Government);
  • Crown Agents (release of stock held by trustees on the Bank Security Account of N T Butterfeild and Son);
  • Board of Trade (Insurance Bill, navigation of channels by vessels likely to damage them or obstruct navigation);
  • Treasury (allowance to F L Godet from the Quit Rents Fund);
  • War Office (cost of local forces, appointment of J H Wodehouse to the Command of the Northern Army in India, appointment of F W Kitchener to be governor);
  • General Post Office (call of the Port Kingston at Bermuda, Savings Bank deposit books, proposed issue of commemorative postage stamps);
  • National Electric Signalling Company (misunderstandings in correspondence with the Colonial Office);
  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (report on lily bulbs from Bermuda);
  • Bermuda Companies Limited (proposed hotel scheme);
  • Paymaster General (sales of land account);
  • London School of Tropical Medicine (extermination of mosquitoes and flies).
