Description

Despatches from Sir Henry Le Geary (September to December 1902) as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (prosecution of H C Masters, exemption of naval commander in chief from import duties, bridge between Watford and Somerset Islands, prisoners of war, harbour improvements, light at Gibbs Hill, Direct West Indies Mail Service, wireless telegraphy);
  • Crown Agents (under gardeners, return of coronation contingent, government deposits with local banks);
  • Foreign Office (duties levied on goods for Boer prisoners, Act No 37 of 1901, infraction of port regulations, anchorage for foreign warships, harbour dues on the Poland, Treaty of Washington Act No 31 of 1902);
  • Law Officers (Act to punish persons aiding prisoners of war to escape);

  • Elder Dempster & Co (Direct Mail Service [Jamaica] proposal to call at Bermuda);
  • North of England Steam Ship Owners Association (improvement of channel leading into St Georges' Harbour);
  • Furness Withy & Co (mail service);
  • Lloyds (disposal of damaged vessels); General Post Office (wireless telegraphy).
