Description

Despatches from Governor Barker as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (Dockyard extension contract, appointment of an Admiralty advocate, importation of Italian labour for the Dockyard work, Pilot Act 1900, exemption from light dues of the SS Laurentian, drawbacks on contractors plant, Boer prisoners, anchorage for foreign national ship);
  • Crown Agents (surcharged one farthing stamps, supply of a map of colony);
  • Foreign Office (anchorage for US ships, UK and US convention for the disposal of real and personal property, pilots on US warships entering Bermuda, Act 53 of 1900, alleged Irish plot to release Boer prisoners, anchorage for US ships);
  • War Office (acquisition of land by naturalised foreigners, land acquisition by Mr Lazario, disposal of property convention with the US, Boer prisoners, Governor Barker, sale of the real estate of Maria Louisa Barss, Volunteer Act 1900, Militia Act 1900, regulation of civil population and of private property in wartime, appointment of a governor, martial law, return passage for the governor);
  • Citizens of St Georges (death of Queen Victoria);
  • General Post Office (Post Office Act);
  • Board of Agriculture (map sent to the governor);
  • Lord Mayor (Queen Victoria memorial).

Individuals:

  • Allan Brothers & Co (exemption from light dues);
  • Elder Dempster and Co (conveyance of a party of sailors to Bermuda);
  • George Simpson, Inspector of Schools in Bermuda (application for appointment as colonial secretary);
  • Musson Wainwright (Hamilton Corporation audit of Wharfinger's books)
