Description

Despatches from Governor Barker and Acting Governor Yule (August to December 1899) as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (bridge between Somerset and Watford Island);
  • Crown Agents (survey stores, widows and orphans relief fund);
  • Council Office (Pilkington versus Gray);
  • Treasury (E J R Willcocks, F W Major);
  • Foreign Office (Spanish Vice Consul, conduct of the Sanitary Officer towards Spanish cruisers, United States tariff and Bermuda produce);
  • War Office (naval and military resources, defence scheme, recommendations of Colonial Defence Committee, regulation of traffic in time of war, proposed transfer of West India Regiment battalion from Sierra Leone to Bermuda, land purchase by A H Andersen);
  • Howard Association [later Howard League for Penal Reform] (reformatory for juvenile offenders);
  • General Post Office (parcel post rates, postal enquiry);
  • Guarantee Society (F W Major);
  • Charity Commission (Berkeley College Fund);
  • Colonial Tea Association (duty on tea and coffee for regular troops)

Individuals:

  • A G Babington (postal mission);
  • Mark Golinsky, Captain (will of Samuel Chapman);
  • F W Major (appointment of receiver general);
  • Charles J Mander (late Sir Josiah Rees);
  • A Norrington (estate of the late James Warne);
