Description

Despatches from Governor Barker (November to December 1898) and letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (bridge between Somerset and Watford Islands, complaint of Austrian warship captain);
  • Crown Agents (survey stores);
  • Board of Trade (Distressed Shipping Bill);
  • Foreign Office (breach of Quarantine Laws by Commander Eaton of the Unites States Navy, Vice Consul of Spain, coaling of US gunboat Helena, complaint of Austrian warship captain);
  • War Office (survey of colony, land purchase by naturalised British subjects, defence of the south coast of Prospect Hill, regulation of traffic in wartime, land holding by foreigners);
  • Direct West India Cable Company (Halifax and Bermudas Cable Company Bill, reduction of cable rates);
  • General Post Office (telegram delayed, incorrect telegram, Post Office Regulation Act 1897, E B Lewin Hill recommended to consolidate and revise postal legislation);
  • Kew Gardens (superintendent of Botanic Station, Eucharis-mite);
  • Halifax and Bermudas Cable Company (Direct West India Cable Company subsidy from Bermuda);
  • Local Government Board (Dr Harvey)

  • Archibald Alison (application for promotion);
  • G A Bishop (application for appointment as superintendent of the botanic station);
