Description

Despatches from Governor Barker and Acting Governor Moore (September to December 1897) as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda sent during the year. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (duty on wines for HMS Terror, West End Channels Act, Bridge between Somerset and Watford Islands);
  • Crown Agents (Powder Commutation Fund, volunteer rifle corps, rifle volunteers);
  • Board of Trade (Distressed Shipping Bill, Pilotage Laws);
  • Treasury (Jamaica to Bermuda Cable);
  • Foreign Office (Cuban insurrection and the SS Bermuda, Consul for Germany J A Conyers, Quarantine Laws);
  • Home Office (acetylene gas, carbide of calcium);
  • War Office (survey and map, Bermuda detachment, leave to governor, land purchases by A D Turini and A H Anderson);
  • General Post Office (postage stamps, parcel post with the US, Post Office Regulation Act, reports of colonial Post Offices, letter from Bermuda);
  • Kew Gardens (botanic garden, lily pest);
  • Direct West India Cable Company (telegraph extension, Jamaica to Bermuda cable, Halifax and Bermudas Cable Company Bill, telegram delayed).

  • Archibald Alison (Direct West India Cable Company Bill, guarantee bond, extension of leave, leave salary);
  • P Burrows (administration of justice, alleged malpractice of F M Cooper JP);
