Description

Despatches from Governor Lyons and Acting Governor Pym as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (bridge over Somerset Ferry, information regarding a cable asked for by United States Navy Hydrographic Office);
  • Crown Agents (contract for dredging in harbour);
  • Board of Trade (wreck inquiries in cases of foreign ships);
  • Treasury (costs of militia and volunteers, requests of the United States hydrographer for information regarding a cable);
  • Foreign Office (facilities for United States government to study colony's records, services of Sergeant Major Miller to Swedish ship Saga, appointment of Mr Mowbray as Italian Consul, US tariff on Bermuda products, commercial relations with the US, services rendered to crew of German ship Hyon, documents forwarded by Consuls, wreck enquiries on foreign ships);
  • War Office (Alien Married Women's Relief Act, maintenance of volunteers and militia, holding of land by naturalised aliens, objections to aliens holding land);
  • Lloyds (establishment of Admiralty Court, case of the Norwegian barque Alpha);
  • Admiralty Registry, Royal Courts of Justice (legislation respecting distressed shipping).

Individuals:

  • A Alison, Colonial Government (recommendations made by him to the colonial government);
  • Sergeant Major W B Miller (fees for services to Swedish ship Saga);
  • Delegates of House of Assembly (holding of lands by naturalised aliens)
