Description

Despatches from Acting Governor Pym, Governor Newdegate and Governor Lyons as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from offices and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (supply of Revenue Collection Acts to Naval Officers, bridge between Somerset and Watford Islands);
  • Board of Trade (Harbour Preservation Act 1892);
  • Treasury (cost of militia and volunteer forces);
  • Foreign Office (commercial negotiations with the United States, 'riotous' conduct of Barbarossa seamen, money order convention with the United States, tariff in the United States on imports from Bermuda);
  • War Office (Coast Defence Volunteer Corps Bill, Militia and Volunteer Bill, discontinuance of inspection of troops at Jamaica and Barbados by the general officer commanding at Bermuda, salary of Lieutenant General Newdegate);
  • Halifax & Bermuda Cable Company (extension of cable to Turks Island and Jamaica);
  • Inland Revenue (income tax on Mr Peniston's salary);
  • Parliamentary Counsel (colonial Courts of Admiralty);
  • General Post Office (remittance for money order business, Post Office Regulation Act, rates of postage).
