Description

Letters from various government offices (departments) most of which relate to the Convict Department and despatches sent from the governor in CO 37/165 and CO 37/166. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

Offices (Government Departments):

  • Admiralty (appointment and travel arrangements for Convict Establishment officers and their families);
  • Agent (Convict Establishment expenses);
  • Board of Trade (Quarantine Act, Lighthouse Maintenance Amendment Act);
  • Council Office (confirming Act 835 of 1857, Act 854 of 1857, acceptance of William Thomas Roberts' application for Assistant Schoolmaster in the Convict Establishment, rejection of Charles Abott for teacher position);
  • Foreign Office (boarding of American vessels by British ships of war, Henry B Brown's appointment as United States Consul)
  • Home Office (convicts: petitions, memorials, discipline, transportation, ship hire, fuel and light allowances, return to England and Ireland, conduct upon return, mitigation of sentences, accommodation, fulfillment of sentences, mail, Naval Works, mistaken identity, need for Presbyterian chaplain, unfitness for labour on Public Works, pardons, threatened unrest on the Medway, rewards for rendering assistance during the 1856 yellow fever outbreak, need of labour, personal property, Prisoners Character Book, clothing, alleged correspondence of convict Jonas Welch, release on licence);
  • Law Officers (Rectory appointment of Mr Lightbourne);
  • House of Commons (cover sheet for address concerning the 1856 yellow fever epidemic);
