Description

Letters from various government offices (departments) most of which relate to the Convict Department and despatches sent from the governor in CO 37/151 to CO 37/153. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

  • House of Commons (temporary administration of the Bermuda government, yellow fever);
  • Admiralty (steamer to remove troops, passages for government employees, Commander Pasco's removal from transport service and appointment as principal officer in charge of convicts, invalid convicts, surgeon superintendent's gratuity, Lieutenant Colonel Murray's commission as Vice Admiral, condition of preserved meat on the Amazon, convict cemetery in the Great Sound);
  • Council Office (Order in Council for Acts Nos 780 to 789);
  • Board of Trade (Acts Nos 780 and 788 left to operation);
  • Foreign Office (expenditure for J B Wells as United States Consul);
  • Home Office (chartering of ships for convict transportation from Ireland, relief for yellow fever sufferers, 'invalid' convicts, insufficiency of convict labour, attempted escape by four convicts, unfit preserved meats on the Amazon, confidential report on convict officers, convict expenditure estimates, convict pardons, pay, discharge, pecuniary assistance, sentence lengths, return to England, remission of sentence requests, and licenses);
  • Chairman of Directors of Convict Prisons, Colonel Jebb (appointment of Captain Pasco as Superintendent of the Bermuda Convict Establishment, proceedings on board the Waterloo from Bermuda, clocks for Boaz Island, Captain Pasco's report on the strength and pay of the Convict Establishment, construction of the prison at Boaz Island);
  • Treasury (convict supplies and transportation, funds for yellow fever sufferers, uniform postage, distressed seaman maintenance, cost of a plan of the town of St Georges, suspension of payment to Sarah Bird, introduction of the electro galvanic machine, rewards to officers for the capture of runaway convicts, cleaning of and fittings for the Thames hulk, property of deceased convict Moore, general government and Convict Establishment employees appointments, salaries, salary advances, allowances, expenses, superannuations, passages and pensions);
  • Ordinance (prison supplies at Boaz Island, Lander's promotion application, removal of Thames hulk from St Georges);
  • War Department (steam communication between St Georges and Hamilton);
  • Land Board (land required for a cemetery);
  • British Consulate New York, Barclay (forwarding of despatches to the Governor of Bermuda);
  • Post Office (Deputy Postmaster Thie's bond, in duplicate);
  • Inspector of Poor Kilmadock, William Trotter (Convict Thomas Buchanan's date of return to England);
  • Liverpool Constabulary Force (forwards a memorial from Robert McKee);
  • General Board of Health (yellow fever report and observations).
