Description

Letters from various government offices (departments) and individuals most of which relate to the despatches sent from the governor in CO 37/143 and CO 37/144. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

Offices (Government Departments):

  • House of Commons (resolution for admitting an address concerning the revival of Bishop Berkeley's College);
  • Admiralty (despatches, transporting fire engines for the convict prisons, convict gratuities, defences of the island, temporary appointment of a medical superintendent, continued spread of yellow fever, passage for A B Morgan, yellow fever report, need of convict labour);
  • Home Office (error in convicting John Shea, pardoned Irish convicts to be returned, conditional pardons, statement of convict Charles Maloney, Convict Warden McEvoy's collusion with convict Gordon, conviction of Thomas Kirwan, the Coromandel, fire engines for the Convict Department, mitigation of sentences, statement of C Newnham's Convict Department service, insufficient convict labour, convicts not employed on defences of island, period of sentences, Sir G Seymour's report on the fever among the convicts, infirm convicts, pardons and indulgences to convicts for services given during the fever outbreak, Convict Establishment estimates);
  • Director General of Convict Prisons (fire engines for Convict Department, unsuitable convict guards);
  • Foreign Office (granting of exequatur for John Howden as United States Council);
  • Treasury (payment for a semaphore, gratuities to pardoned convicts, escort allowance, convict requisition estimates for 1853, leave of absence salary, case of Kennedy versus Trott, case and claims of former Convict Guard C Newnham, cost of using gas to light Boaz Island Prison, Mrs Black's gratuity, appointment of two additional convict guards, fire engines, medicine, convict fresh meat rations, expenses incurred by Ordnance Department on account of the Convict Service, passage allowance, measures for preventing the spread of yellow fever, salary increase requests);
  • Ordnance (supplies for the Boaz Island Prison, yellow fever);
  • Army Medical Department (recommends A B Morgan for the position of Superintendent of Convicts);
  • Horse Guards (thanks for yellow fever report);
  • Berkeley College Revival Committee Secretary, W C Dowding (reviving the college for training 'Negroes & Colored Persons');
  • Society of Apothecaries (medicine for the Convict Establishment);
  • General Post Office (Mr Thie's bond as Deputy Postmaster).

  • William Ackley (convict William Ross);
  • Sarah Bird (property of her deceased brother Joseph Bird);
  • Cox & Co (Colonel Philpott's salary as Acting Governor, requests Colonel Philpott's death certificate);
  • Jane Fussell (applies for financial relief from her son Captain Jervis);
  • J H Graham (suggestions for solving the contention caused by the payment of high salaries to certain government from public funds);
  • B Charles Gray & Sons (forwards a petition concerning land required for a cemetery ) [petition not included in volume];
  • Captain Jervis, Superintendent of the Convict Establishment (state of the Convict Establishment);
  • Colonel W Hutchinson (Warner's and Becks' applications for increased pay):
  • William Harriott, Overseer of the Thames (requests an appointment in England);
  • J Ledsom (property of deceased convict James Wright);
  • A B Morgan (passage by mail ship);
  • Bishop of Newfoundland (land required for a cemetery);
  • Sir John Patteson (Bishop Berkeley's College);
  • James Pope (arrival at Deptford on the Falcon as mate in charge of convicts);
  • John Reid (claim to pay as guard in charge of pardoned convicts on the Bristol);
  • Stillwell (Governor Elliot's half salary certificate);
  • Strahan & Co (Colonel Eden's salary as acting governor);
  • Shand & Mason (dimensions of fire engines)
  • David Thomas, Shipbroker (freight charges for conveyance of two fire engines on the Falcon).
