Description

Letters from various government offices (departments) and individuals, most of which relate to the despatches sent from the governor in CO 37/139, CO 37/140 and acting governor in CO 37/141. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (passage, mail ship, lighthouse management and maintenance);
  • Council Office (Acts Nos 748, 753, 756-778 left to operation);
  • Board of Trade (Act No 748 left to operation);
  • Foreign Office (case of piracy by Robert Hodge master of the American brig Sea-Mew, assistance given to yellow fever sufferers on board the French frigate L'Armide);
  • Home Office (lighting of Boaz Island Prison, plan and estimate for bone crushing mill for convicts, conditional pardons, petitions, commuted sentences, prison buildings boundary and distribution, removal of incapacitated convicts, transportation to Australia, arming of convicts guards with colts revolver pistols, ability for convict ship Edward to hold 246 convicts, convict gratuities, pardoned convicts conveyed on the James and Edward);
  • Treasury (suggested changes to the convict diet, gratuity of £10 to Colour Sergeant Malcolm, expense of gas experiments in convict prisons, convict clothing, stationery, bone crushing machines, rejection of Mr Trott's application for surplus quit rents, schoolmasters for convicts' instruction, meat biscuit report, Kennedy versus Trott, expense of pardoned convicts, fire engines, J Pope's retirement allowance, irregular delivery of convict medical supplies, Convict Guard James Cummings' salary);
  • Ordnance (construction of a causeway and jetties on Boaz, Watford, and Somerset Islands, supplies for the prison buildings at Boaz Island);
  • Inspector of Prisons (bone crushing machines, fire engines, rule of withholding convict gratuities);
  • House of Correction, Preston (statement by convicts concerning the state of the Convict Establishment in Bermuda);
  • Destitute Sailors Asylum (return passage for Joseph Jones);
  • Trinity House (no further observations to give on Bermuda's lighthouse);
  • Exhibition Commissioners (returns medals and certificates).

  • Admiral Sir Francis Austin (requests investigation of Francis Black's dismissal from the Convict Department);
  • William Ackley (convict Benjamin Haynes);
  • Francis Burdett Black (his dismissal from the Convict Department);
  • James Cummings (arrival as convict guard in charge of 20 pardoned prisoners, salary);
  • Francis Doyle (pay inquiry, receipt for £3 5s 2d);
  • William Henry Foster (passage on a government ship);
  • Edward Faithfull (return of money paid for passage requested for destitute pardoned convict William Costlie);
  • Commander Henry Hire (requests additional retirement allowance or reappointment to public service);
  • T C Haliburton (applies for appointment as governor of Bermuda);
  • Alfred Munn Lloyd (requests an investigation into his dismissal from the Convict Department and copies of the allegations against him);
  • Frederick Lowes (recommends Quarter Master Bullen for a similar position in the United Kingdom);
  • William Morten (convict Edward Brotherton alias Robert Hervey) [letter not included in volume, Colonial Office draft response included];
  • Colonel G Macdonald (applies for appointment as governor of Bermuda);
  • Rev J S Roberts (thanks for appointment to rectory of Smiths and Hamilton, expense of passage);
  • Mary Rodgers and others (requests pardons for convicts Timothy and Andrew Rodgers [Rogers]);
  • John Reid (arrival of pardoned convicts on the Bristol, convicts' gratuities);
  • Stillwell (salary certificates of Governor Captain Charles Elliot);
  • John R Stephens (arrival at Deptford in charge of 36 pardoned convicts on the Felcon);
  • Thompson & Co (bone crushing machine freight accounts);
  • Richard Watkins (convict F W Southcomb);
  • J M Washington (requests an interview to discuss the refusal of the Legislative Council to agree with the vote of the Assembly to grant money for the support of a Presbyterian minister).
