Description

Letter from offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters relating to Bermuda. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (petition from Bermudians regarding the route of steamers, appointment of T T Tucker as marshal of the Vice Admiralty Court, institution of a library for dockyard men, Mrs Charters' claim to salary arrears, despatches from governor of Nova Scotia to the governor of Bermuda sent by a merchant vessel, lighthouse, convicts: payment of stores, unavailability of Baretto Junior to transport convicts, medical stores, death of two convicts, cannot confirm Mr Belam as overseer of the Medway, naval stores, inclusion of convict's reserve earning in Naval Department estimates, completion of convict hospital, shipment of Bermuda prison, invalid convicts, fitting the Tenedos as a hospital hulk, convict bedding and medicines, provisions, payment of Mr Belam's passage home, attempted rescue of convict Mitchell);
  • Colonial Agent (payment of injured convict Henry Metley's pension);
  • Council (Mr Musson's appointment to the Council, Customs Duties Act 685 assented to, regulation of places to which convicts may be sent, Acts left to operation: 668, 670 to 674, 676 to 680, 682, 683, 687 to 690, and 686);
  • Board of Trade (confirmation of Acts 675 and 685);
  • Foreign Office (alleged attempted rescue of convict John Mitchell by friends based in the United States);
  • Ordnance (need for convict mechanics, proposed employment of Lieutenant Ward for the Boaz Island works, appointment of Clerk of Works Lander to be superintendent of the construction of the new prison, communication between Boaz and Ireland Island, expense of prison buildings on Boaz Island, return of mistakenly sent papers, levelling of site for the proposed prison);
