Description

Letters from individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • John James Ashby (convict guard application);
  • Mrs Elizabeth Ann Ballen (requests passage to join her convict guard husband);
  • Rev H Barker (enquiry regarding convict Henry House);
  • Mrs Harriet Belvin (petition for passage to join her husband Robert, a convict guard) [encloses a letter written to her by her husband from the Thames hulk];
  • Thomas Boden and Thomas Dilks, convict guards (request rations for their wives for the trip to Bermuda on the Medway);
  • George Brighton (convict guard application);
  • Cox and Co (governor's salary certificate);
  • John Crome (convict guard application);
  • Call Martin & Co (requests payment of Robert Kennedy's salary);
  • Lieutenant Frayer (resigns his appointment as overseer of the Tenedos);
  • Thomas Gardiner, 10th Battalion of the Royal Artillery (advance of salary, rations on passage for his family, declines appointment of convict guard);
  • Lord Marcus Hill (enquiry regarding convict Harding);
  • William Kempe, Quarter Master of the Tenedos (requests free passage back or transfer to Convict Establishment in Jersey, salary, date of Medway sailing enquiry, requests £5 salary advance);
  • William Kempe, Thomas Boden, Henry Smith, Bernard Ward, Frances Doyle, Henry Malone, John Barber, Thomas Dilks, John Cunningham [?], Owen Reilly, Michael Nowan [?], Charles O'Connor, Thomas Galloway, and James Baxter (petition from convict guards to be paid in Kingstown as the Medway had not set sail as planned);
  • Robert Kennedy, Colonial Secretary (statement regarding the land dispute between himself and the provost marshal, appeal to Queen in Council respecting his suit with the provost marshal, Act respecting the abolition of fees on shipping, application to receive a full salary during his absence);
  • A Maconachie (asks to see reports on convict management);
  • Henry Malone, former Sergeant of the 76th Regiment (convict guard application);
  • John Nugent, Roman Catholic Missionary (state of Roman Catholic clergy in Bermuda, religious destitution of Catholic convicts);
  • Thomas Paterson (military convict James Brownlie's wish to transfer power of attorney to him);
  • James F Penrose (requests appointment as steward of the Medway);
  • James Punchard (resigns as overseer of a convict hulk, applies for a pension, retirement, certificate of health, payment of salary, certificate of conduct required by the Admiralty, receipt of half salary, requests speedy decision regarding pension);
  • William Reid, Governor (sends letter from Post Master General James Taylor requesting a pension)
  • Mrs Isabella Rance (enquiry regarding a remittance from her convict guard son, Henry Rance);
