Description

Letters from offices (government departments and other organisations) on matters related to Bermuda. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Admiralty (report on the inability to meet the annual expense of the magnetical and meteorological observatory, Samuel Salter's patent as registrar of Vice Admiralty Court cancelled, inability to promote Lieutenant Hire, inability to recommend non-commissioned marine officers as convict guards, conveyance of mail between Bermuda and the North American provinces, case of convict James Jones whose navy pension had been cancelled, fitting of Medway, plans for convict hulks, passage for Mr Kempe on the Medway, use of a room for Roman Catholic convicts to religious services, sailing of the Medway, stowage on hulks, four candidates for convict guards appointments, accommodation of convicts on the Medway, suggestions concerning a floating dry dock, use of the Gleaner in capturing certain soldier prisoners, passenger count on the Medway, conveyance of convict guards and their wives, steam communication between Bermuda and Halifax, removal of pardoned convicts on war and mail ships, payment for naval stores supplied to the Convict Department, convict labour, confinement of convicts, death of Sergeant John Charters, stowage, ventilation and space on convict hulks, appropriation of new food store for convict purposes, superintendence of lighthouse machinery, quarterly account of biscuits supplied for convicts);
