Description

Despatches from William Reid, governor of Bermuda. Letters from various 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not, and correspondents and subjects are as follows.

Offices:

  • Admiralty (Convict Overseer Harriott's salary, deepening of mouth of St George's Harbour, Corporal Harris to act under Captain Hope, expenses for the relief of the crew of the Charles Hesaltine, Post Office charge);
  • Crown Agents (vaccination);
  • Home Office (Tread Wheel Act, convict surgeons placed under Dr Hall, convict hospital not wanted, Lieutenant Fayrer made superintendent of the Convict Establishment, Mr Harriott censured for insubordination to the superintendent, Surgeon Smith's pay to be stopped for being absent);
  • Board of Ordnance (deepening of St George's Harbour);
  • Treasury (escheated property to be granted to John Roberts and John R Gibbons, claims of Colonial Secretary and Provost Marshal to certain land, Bishop of Newfoundland's visitation bill);
  • College of Physicians (thanks for receipt of account of the Yellow Fever epidemic);

Individuals:

  • Mr Andre, Consul General for France (requests a certificate showing that Dayrie Alquier was a passenger on L'Amanda) [in French];
  • Cox & Company (requests governor's certificates of existence for salary purposes);
  • Mrs Isabella Campbell (requests that a box be forwarded to her convict son John);
  • Joshua Misich (packet for Prince Albert);
  • M Sanders (asks about records of an event which occurred during the 'first American War' concerning Monsieur Ducarpe and his daughter);
  • G Thorburn (enquiry concerning G J Hamilton);
  • Henry Tucker (positioning of coal ships at Castle Harbour);
  • Thomas Walmsby (asks who was governor in 1754);
  • Reverend Edward L Ward (enquiry concerning a convict named Abraham Allen);
  • John Walker (claims compensation for persecutions by the colonial authorities, monopolisation of the navy and army contracts by his property offered to the government for sale, return to the United States)
