Description

Despatches from William Reid, governor of Bermuda (September to December 1843, but including returns sent earlier or later) together with letters from various 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda sent during 1843. Despatches are described at item level; other correspondence is not and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (Governor's annual report, cedar timber for shipbuilding, marine survey, mail communication, Admiralty charts for public library, 'Yellow Fever widows' to be sent home);
  • Commander-in-Chief (Yellow Fever epidemic: sending of a medical officer, report laid before Duke of Wellington, withholding of fresh troops);
  • Privy Council Office (quarantine suggested as precautionary measure due to Yellow Fever epidemic);
  • Board of Trade (Pilotage Act left to operation, Revenue Act approved, law governing reprints of English books);
  • Foreign Office (departure of United States Consul Tudor Tucker);
  • Home Office (printed copy of instructions to the superintendent of convicts, convicts placed under Lieutenant Fayrer due to fever, governor's report on the Yellow Fever epidemic laid before Sir J Graham and Dr Hunter, Mr Richard's claims to promotion, report on the Savings Bank Act from John Tidd Pratt);
  • Board of Ordnance (Captain Hurd's survey, government house furniture);
  • Treasury (confirmation of Customs Salaries Act, Mr Kennedy's salary while absent, Lighthouse on Gibbs Hill, no objection to Customs Act);
  • Land Board (lands of Colonial Secretary, Provost Marshal and Sheriff should be let or sold and the profits equally divided).

Individuals:

  • Call Martin & Company (Colonial Secretary's salary);
  • Cox & Company (request for Governor's certificates of existence for salary purposes);
  • Reverend J Lightbourne (claim to the archdeaconry);
  • William Rowland (asks for proof of Thomas King's death)
