Description

Letters from various offices [government departments] and individuals which relate to matters in the governor's despatches in CO 37/100 and CO 37/101. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (fitting of gunboats for the local government, passage for Horticultural Assistant James McGall, cannons training for dockyard workmen, shipment of vine plants, prevention of foreigners from inspecting naval and military works, naval commissioner's house transfer to the Ordnance, government interference with Naval Department regulations, instruction of local boatmen, lighthouse construction proposal report);
  • Colonial Agent (recommends Robert Fox as principal and James McGall as assistant Agricultural and Horticultural superintendent);
  • Commander in Chief (objects attaching volunteer militia companies to the regiment, inadequacy of the garrison for defence, small arms training for government workmen, inability to grant Colonel Reid brevet rank, conveyance of the regiment, exclusion of foreigners from visiting defense works, inability to force veteran soldiers to serve after being discharged, appointment of non commissioned officers to Bermuda's infantry);
  • Home Office (remarks on Gaols and Prisons Act, convict labour distribution, prohibition of using convicts for private service, memorandum on an Act for improving the Police);
  • Law Office (assents to certain Acts, Rev Murray's eligibility for a benefice, crimes on the high seas);
  • Ordnance (Dockyard defences, map on tracing paper of the reefs and islands of Bermuda, clothing for recruits, construction of storehouses, local recruits for Ordnance corps, light arms and ammunition for local soldiers, arms training of Ordnance labourers, garrisons force, need for master gunners, heavy guns for Fort St Catherine, construction of military prison, authority over artillery quartered in the naval commissioner's house, governor's plans regarding naval artillery men and sappers and miners, restoration of signal posts);
  • Treasury (Revenue Act allowed, appointment of William Harvey to Customs position, Archdeacon Spencer's salary, payment of mail packets, Sir S Chapman's passage money, Parliamentary papers suitable for sending to the colonies, lighthouse construction, comments on financial returns);
  • War Office (governor's militia plan, proposed arms training of dockyard workmen, local recruits' expenses, inexpediency of making discharged soldiers join the militia, Maltese battalion);
  • Post Office (Post Office Act unobjectionable, government detainment of mail boats);

Individuals:

  • John Berry (enquires after the effects of his deceased nephew - soldier John Berry);
  • Cox & Co (requests the governor's certificate);
  • B Charles Gray (distress due to the hurricane);
  • Rev James Grey Murray (payment of his salary as curate of St George);
  • Bishop of Nova Scotia (recommendation of Rev Murray and Rev Tucker for vacant benefices);
  • Bishop of Newfoundland (freight of his carriage, vacant benefices recommendations, authority to appoint Rev Samuel Musson);
  • Henry Tucker (Bishopric of Newfoundland's connection to Bermuda);
  • E Winslow (inability to access colonial funds for Parliamentary papers - no longer agent)
