Description

Despatches from Governor Sir Hilgrove Turner and Acting Governor Robert Kennedy as well as letters from various 'offices' (Government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not and correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Commander in Chief (conveyance to England of the extra women and children of the 81st Regiment);
  • Home Office (insubordinate state of the convicts, three male and two female convicts sent to Bermuda from Demerara [Guyana] under sentence of transportation, trial of five convicts for cutting and maiming their keepers, Captain Boxer's actions to quiet disturbances among convicts);
  • Treasury (governor's salary, opinion regarding John Wainwright's penalties for removing slaves to Trinidad, chief justice's salary, Custom House rent, floor plan of Colonial House in Hamilton, copy of 'An Act to provide for the Custom House Establishment in Bermuda', memorial from Customs commissioners);
  • War Office (salary of the deputy secretary for St George's port, appointment of Lieutenant McGoldrick to the post).

Individuals:

  • Thomas Butterfield (claim to office of chief justice);
  • Mr Cosser (letter for the governor);
  • John William Cox (petition requesting reinstatement as conductor of the tanks for supplying water to the British Navy);
  • Mrs Elisa Lucas Durnford (arrears of quit rent due to her for the occupation of certain land by the military);
  • James Christie Esten (leave of absence, pension claims, statement of chief justice's and attorney general's salary, requests to be presented to the King);
  • George Greene (enquiry regarding the late John Greene's property);
  • Lieutenant General J Hodgson (Chief Justice Esten's pension claims);
  • Captain William Jones (asks that praise concerning his conduct in the Adelaide case could be communicated to the Admiralty);
  • Frederick Justice (repeats request for payment for serving as attorney and solicitor general);
  • Bishop of Nova Scotia (remarks on the Bermuda Clergy Act of 1827) [not in volume];
  • D Pidgeon (compost manure recommended for Bermuda);
  • Duncan Stewart, Advocate of the Admiralty (claims to a legal promotion);
  • Archdeacon Aubrey G Spencer (removal to another station);
  • Richard Jennings Tucker (petition requesting reinstatement to the Council);
  • George Watt (requests confirmation of the death of a convict named Alexander Aitkens).
