Description

Despatches from Governor Sir Hilgrove Turner as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (Vice Admiralty Court, expense of stationing a warship at Ireland Island);
  • Commander in Chief (control of convicts on Ireland Island);
  • Council Office (appointment of Mr Smith to the Council, new seals);
  • Home Office (commutation of Joe Albouy's sentence, conveyance of convicts, reception of B Shea and E McDonald on the hulks, prevention of insubordination on the Coromandel);
  • Law Officers (removal of the infant children of domestic slaves, case of the Adelaide);
  • James Stephen, legal adviser (case of the removal of a domestic slave named Bessette and her child to St Vincent);
  • Navy Office (Mr Kennedy's passage);
  • Board of Ordnance (return of defence works);
  • Treasury (Mr Smith's salary, removal of a female slave and child, Reverend A Spencer's salary, requests the quit rent account).

  • Thomas Butterfield (leave of absence, improper appointment of Judge of Admiralty Court, intention to travel to the island);

  • Mrs Elisa L Durnford (claim to certain land, sketch of Durnford's Glebe);
  • Farquhar & Company (Adelaide appeal case);
  • Frederick Justice (asks for consideration of his case);
  • Robert Kennedy (financial statement, return of fees on shipping, asks to see the Blue Book, salary, passage, Adelaide appeal case);
  • John P Musson (his appointment as attorney general of Barbados);
  • David Roberts (application for passage);
  • Reverend Aubrey Spencer, Archdeacon (requests full salary during absence, leave of absence extension request, petition from St George's residents in his favour);
  • W R Spencer (supports his son Aubrey Spencer's application);
  • Joseph Todhunter (John Harvey Darrell's appointment as solicitor general, certificate confirming Darrell's acting as Law Officer).
