Description

Despatches from Governor Sir Hilgrove Turner as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Colonial Secretary Robert Kennedy (reports arrival, revenue and expenditure accounts, Quit Rent accounts, Powder Fund accounts, Treasurer's accounts, fees on ships received by the governor and colonial secretary);
  • Admiralty (defence of Bermuda, convicts for Ordnance works, seizure of the Adelaide for having slaves and American beef and pork on board, office of Admiralty judge, does not recommend stationing a warship at Ireland Island);
  • Commander in Chief (inadequacy of provisions for Sappers and Miners and 96th Regiment,
  • passage for one of the King's band members);
  • Board of Trade (College and Post Office Acts, opening of ports to United States vessels, Adelaide case, cannot recommend that Hamilton and St George ports be made free warehousing ports);
  • James Stephen, legal adviser (Adelaide case, instructions for Collector of Customs regarding domestic slaves, Mr Musson's request to be made slave protector, Slave Trade Abolition Act as it related to infant slaves who travelled with their parents);
  • Navy Office (passage for King's Band musician Christopher Dammar);
  • Treasury (Sir Hilgrove Turner's salary, £750 improperly drawn from the military chest by the governor, governor's allowance for rations of fuel, inconvenience of different values of the Spanish dollar, reproval of Messrs Kennedy and Heseltine, removal of infant slaves to the West Indies);
  • Slave Registry Office (reports the receipt of the return of slaves from Bermuda)

  • Mr Bainbridge (certificate to receive James Christie Esten's salary);
  • Thomas Butterfield (accepts appointment as attorney general at Barbados, passage to England);
  • Child & Company (certificate to receive John Paynter Musson's salary);
  • Mrs Mary Daniell alias Greene (claim to the property of her late uncle John Greene);
  • Foord & Drakeford (petition for permission to move 50 slaves from Bermuda to Trinidad, lack of slave registry in Bermuda);
  • J Grubb (conveyance in the Ranger of persons who had fled from St Domingo [Haiti] in 1793);
  • Frederick Justice (claims to payment for services as solicitor general, salary as attorney general);
  • John Paynter Musson (slaves found on board the Adelaide, copy of 'An Act to ameliorate the condition of the slaves and free persons of colour in these islands', memorial to exchange legal appointment with Thomas Butterfield);
  • Aubrey G Spencer (thanks for salary increase);
  • William Smith (claims protection);
  • Duncan Stewart (removal from his appointment and claim to another);
  • H Verey (claim on Mr Musson);
  • C A White (requests an interview concerning his request to move slaves from Bermuda to Trinidad);
  • Various merchants (petition complaining of the fees charged on vessels by the public secretary)
