Description

Despatches from Acting Governor William Smith and Governor Sir Hilgrove Turner as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Board of Trade (Mr Holland's case);
  • Home Office (convicts for Ordnance Department works);
  • Law Officers (burglary case of a slave named Joe Brown);
  • James Stephen, legal adviser (proposed report on institutions and laws of the island, Mr Butterfield's case);
  • Navy Office (Mr Musson's passage);
  • Board of Ordnance (Fort Cunningham);
  • Treasury (Mr Evan's wish to sell property of J W Douglass an alien, Sir William Lumley's military allowance, proposed estimate of the civil establishment, Mr Musson's salary advance);
  • Ecclesiastical Board (approval of Reverend Pott for vacant benefice).

  • Thomas Butterfield (requests restoration to office of Advocate and Attorney General, claim to legal appointment);

  • Mr Onslow (thanks for attention to Mr Justice's claim);
  • Reverend Francis Pott (possession of the land for which he had been recommended);
  • W Turner (asks for assistance in obtaining payment of a debt due from Mr Musson);
  • Thomas Wilson (Mr Holland's claims).
