Description

Despatches from Governor Sir William Lumley, Acting Governor William Smith and Governor Sir Hilgrove Turner as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty ('Florida Negroes' sent to Trinidad, Mr Holland's case, Royal Marine Hospital, discontinuance of Colonel Lewis's allowance, Court of Vice Admiralty proceedings);
  • Commander in Chief (misunderstanding regarding the duties of the governor and the officer next in command, Sir William Lumley's allowance as commander of troops, conveyance of troops from Halifax to Bermuda);
  • Home Office (conveyance of convicts for Ordnance works, instructions to superintendent of convicts);
  • Law Officers (Sir Lumley's case, John Pattison Lawson's forgery case);
  • James Stephen, legal adviser (Mr Evan's wish for grant of property purchased by an 'alien', Sir William Lumley's case, proceedings of Lawson's case before the Piracy Court, draft instructions for the governor, burglary case of 'Negro slave' Joe Brown, Mr Holland's case);

  • J G Palmer (enquiry regarding Thomas Butterfield's suspension);
  • Gene Riall (affect of trade on revenue of the government of Bermuda);
  • Lord Scarbrough (Sir William Lumley's situation);
  • Merchants of St Georges (petition requesting that the port of St Georges might be made a Free Warehousing Port);
  • Clergy (petition against the recall of Governor Sir William Lumley).
