Description

Despatches from Governor William Lumley (items 1-20) and Acting Governor William Smith (items 21-29), as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

  • Petition from 'Principal inhabitants of Bermuda' (petition containing 417 signatures against Governor Sir William Lumley).

  • Admiralty (question of whether to send 'Florida Negroes' to Trinidad or to allow them to remain in Bermuda);
  • Board of Trade (consideration of certain Acts);
  • Law Officers (action against Provost Marshal regarding debt of escaped prisoner, Governor's imprisonment of churchwardens);
