Description

Letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (Florida 'negroes' working at the naval yard: proposal for restoring them to their owners, sending them to Trinidad or subjecting them to corporal punishment);
  • Board of Trade (consideration of certain Acts);
  • Council Office (appointment of Samuel Smith Junior and George Huskisson to the Council, Order in Council disallowing an Act for regulating Customs fees);
  • Law Officers (quarrel between the colonists and the governor concerning the placement of the garrison in the church aisles during divine service, question regarding the Revenue Act);
  • Treasury (salary of the governor's private secretary).

Individuals:

  • Parishioners of Saint George's, headed by John Till (petition complaining of Governor Lumley's decision to place the garrison in the church aisles during divine service, a printed copy of the legal opinions of John Harvey Tucker and Benjamin Dickinson Harvey);
  • Mrs Eccles Green (inquiry regarding the fate of her uncle John Green);
  • James Christie Esten (payment of his salary arrears from the Powder Fund, requests an interview, his suspension from the Council, departure for Bermuda);
  • Edward Ellice (sends a memorial of the Assembly complaining of Governor Sir William Lumley's conduct, includes statements and papers connected with the memorial);
  • D'Arcy Strangwayes, Agent (cases of chief justice and two other members of Council who were suspended);
  • John Harvey Tucker (his attempt to access the public records).
