Description

Despatches from Governor Sir James Cockburn (items 1-6), Acting Governor William Smith (items 7-18), and Governor William Lumley (items 19-28) as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (appointment of Sir William Lumley as Vice Admiral);
  • Piracy Commission (draft commission for trial of offences at Bermuda);
  • Privy Council Office (drafts of a commission and instructions for Sir William Lumley);
  • Navy Office (a passage to Bermuda for Rev George Coster);
  • Treasury (arrangements in the Custom Department at Hamilton and St George's, payment of Governor Cockburn's private secretary, payment to Colonial Secretary Robert Kennedy for compensation in lieu of land);
  • Clergy (arrangements concerning rectors, livings, and churches in the various parishes, clergy salaries).

Individuals:

  • A S Hamond (recommends his son, Captain Graham E Hamond, for the governorship of Bermuda);
  • J Innes (responds to a letter concerning his request for employment);
  • John Harvey Tucker (comments further on a complaint concerning his wish to have access to the public records).
