Description

Despatches from Governor Sir James Cockburn as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (use of persons employed in the naval yard to take up arms, reference to letter filed with Colonies General concerning the removal of Florida refugee 'Negroes' at Bermuda, proposal to use 'captured slaves' to conduct public works in Bermuda due to the difficulty in procuring labourers);
  • Board of Trade (consideration of Acts);
  • Foreign Office (appointment of an American Consul);
  • General Post Office (Princess Elizabeth packet, appointment of a postmaster);
  • Treasury (salary of governor's private secretary, response to petition of Trimingham & Co, relief from surcharge for the comptroller of customs, report on a petition from St Georges' merchants and others, Colonial Secretary Robert Kennedy's bill).

Individuals:
