Description

Despatches from Acting Governor William Smith (items 1 - 17) and Governor Sir James Cockburn (items 18 - 27) as well as letters from various offices (government departments and other organisations) and individuals on matters related to Bermuda. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from officers and individuals is not. Correspondents and subjects for offices and individuals are as follows:

Offices:

  • Admiralty (appointment of Duncan Stewart rather than Thomas Butterfield as Advocate of the Vice Admiralty Court, Ireland Island);
  • Commander in Chief (sends documents concerning the trial of private soldiers guilty of theft);
  • Board of Ordnance (grant of Mullet Island to Mrs Frances Tucker, Royal Sappers and Mariners employed on public works);
  • Treasury (salary of the acting governor's private secretary, continuance of the garrison boat, expense of finishing the officers' barracks, use of Quit Rents for the establishment of a public school, complaint by merchants and others regarding the removal of the Customs House from St Georges to Hamilton, appointment of Customs officers at St Georges, lists of vessels cleared outward at the Customs House which arrived at and sailed from the ports of Hamilton and St Georges from 19 December 1815 to 1 October 1816 with their tonnage, destination, and cargo).

Individuals:

  • G Cockburn (requests an additional three months leave for his brother Sir James Cockburn);
  • Major General Robert Douglass (requests appointment as governor at Bermuda in case of a vacancy);
  • Daniel Leonard (comments on objections to his memorial).
